Superfood spotlight: chia seeds
These itty bitty seeds are anti-inflammatory, rich in fibre, full of antioxidants and so much more.
It’s hard to imagine how something as small as a chia seed could contain the makings of an entire plant.
THE BENEFITS
- High in fibre (11 grams per two tablespoons), chia seeds can absorb up to 10 times their weight in water, taking on a gel-like consistency. Research suggests this effect also takes place in the stomach, helping absorb toxins and promoting fullness.
- These seeds are rich in anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids, which support brain function and cardiovascular health.
- They’re loaded with antioxidants, which help prevent age-related illnesses and protect the seeds from going rancid.
- Nutrient-dense chia seeds are a source of calcium, magnesium, iron and folic acid.
Did you know? These tiny seeds were prized by both the Aztecs and Mayans for their endurance-giving qualities.
