Benefits of Oregano

There isn’t just one type of this flavourful herb, a staple of many cuisines around the world. There are actually several species that can be used for culinary purposes, though the most common variety is Origanum vulgare. Used for centuries as a medicinal plant, oregano was originally cultivated in the Mediterranean region. This versatile savoury plant is easy to add to your diet and can be incorporated into a variety of recipes.

THE BENEFITS

From A to Za’atar

Za’atar is a spice blend that traditionally contains oregano, thyme, sumac and sesame seeds. It refers to the spice mixture, as well as the family of herbs, including wild oregano, which make up the base of this delectable seasoning. This Middle Eastern culinary mix has been referenced throughout the ages for its healing capabilities. The oregano and thym in za’atar contain potent plant compounds, including thymol and carvacrol, which have demonstrated antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Za’atar can be used in any dish that calls for oregano or thyme.

Goodbye, Germs

One of oregano’s most promising applications is as an antimicrobial agent; it has been shown to be effective against certain bacterial, viral and fungal infections. Notably used as a treatment for colds and flus, oil of oregano has been shown in recent studies to be associated with a reduction in symptoms, such as sore throat, cough or hoarseness. Oregano oil may benefit oral health, too: One study demonstrated antimicrobial activity equal to name-brand mouthwashes. It may also reduce pain and inflammation associated with some oral and dental conditions.

Mood Modulator

In animal models, treatment with oregano oil demonstrated an improvement in stress-related and depressive behaviours in rats. In particular, the compound carvacrol seems to move easily from the blood into the brain. Research is still uncovering how this works, but preliminary studies suggest that carvacrol may affect levels of the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin, which are related to reward, motivation, learning and mood.

KEEP IN MIND

Oregano oil is not intended as a replacement for medical care. Always speak with your healthcare practitioner before trying supplements or making significant changes to your diet.
