The Chinese calendar is believed to be one of the oldest calendar systems in the world, dating back centuries before the creation of the calendar we presently use. It measures time based on the astronomical observations of the movement of the sun, moon and stars. Each year of the calendar's lunar cycle is represented by one of 12 animals. Each year the animal is different, and every 12 years the animal will return to signify the Chinese lunar year.
