The easiest ways to get fit and feel good, according to a celebrity trainer
Simone De La Rue's methods are effective yet not daunting, which is why they're so popular—just ask any of her celebrity devotees, such as Jennifer Garner, Reese Witherspoon and Chrissy Teigen.
“When you dance, your heart rate goes up without your realizing it, and you see fast results,” says Simone De La Rue, founder of Body by Simone and ambassador for SodaStream Canada’s Summer Health & Wellness tour. Read on for her best workout and self-care tips.
1. Dance it out.
“So many women don’t do cardio, which means their heart rates don’t ever get to that impactful calorie- and fat-burning state,” says Simone. She also clocks coordination and mind-body awareness as major benefits of dance, both of which are especially important as we age. “We don’t have a lot of equipment in my studio. Instead, the idea is to dance, sweat and use your own body weight to build and tone long lean muscles.”
2. Have fun.
While sprinting around a track may be your thing, an upbeat dance class is a fun and effective way to get your heart racing. “The beauty about dance is that it’s always changing. You’re not just doing the same movement on a treadmill, for example,” says Simone. And her latest obsession is a mini trampoline (she likes the JumpSport models). “It offers a full body workout that’s low-impact and offers quick results.”
3. Eat well.
“A healthy body is really 20% exercise and 80% diet. So even though I work in fitness, I really believe in the power of what we eat as fuel.” Simone recommends small meals, centred on protein before and after a workout; and instead of dieting, try eliminating just one food at a time––such as sugar and alcohol––and see how you feel. When clients are eliminating alcohol, she suggests drinking bubbly water garnished with fresh citrus or mint. “I use the SodaStream Fizzi One Touch for making sparkling water. It’s like you’re drinking a fun cocktail without the sugar and alcohol.”
4. Freshen Up.
What if you’re heading to a meeting right after a sweaty dance session? Simone recommends loads of dry shampoo and a hydrating facial mist with a pretty scent like rosewater. “And waterproof mascara, of course,” she adds.
