Top 3 Jillian Michaels workout DVDs
A couple weeks ago, trainer and former
The Biggest Loser coach Jillian Michaels visited Toronto, where she led a group exercise session. BodyShred, a 30- or 45-minute high-intensity endurance-based workout developed by the renowned fitness guru is exclusive to GoodLife Fitness in Canada. The name is derived from an acronym—Synergistic, High-Intensity, Resistance, Endurance, Dynamics—which gives you a taste of what the workout entails. Not only did I cancel my gym membership earlier this year (the New Year's crowds got to me), but I'd never consider training under such a demanding and (gulp) intimidating instructor. If you're like me, or weren't in the Toronto area to take advantage of this class, that doesn't mean you can't, too, benefit from Michaels's training prowess. Try one of these exercise DVDs from the comfort (and safety) of your own home.
1. Jillian Michaels: Yoga Meltdown Don't let images of meditation and serenity fool you. This workout is intense. As embarrassing as this is to admit, I started the Level 1 workout and, panting for air five minutes in, I realized I was only warming up. Once the real program commenced, I was hitting pause every few beats just to catch my breath. (My upper body is especially weak, and the exercise involves a lot of plank positions.) The video promises users can lose up to five pounds per week, and if I didn't need a week-long recovery between sessions, I'm convinced I'd be living proof.
2. Jillian Michaels: 30 Day Shred Bring gym-based group exercise home. Like BodyShred, this interval-based workout mixes cardio and strength training. The video offers three complete workouts and promises weight-loss results of up to 20 pounds in 30 days.
3. Jillian Michaels: Killer Buns & Thighs For a more targeted calorie burn, this DVD is my favourite. A lower body workout aimed at sculpting—you guessed it—the legs and butt, each 30-minute session helps you burn fat and banish saddlebags.
