9 Asparagus Recipes and Why it's Good for Your Health
Why We Love Asparagus
1. Fights disease: This vegetable is an excellent source of folate, a B vitamin that is needed to make DNA. Folate helps protect our cells and prevent changes in them that may lead to cancer. Try a side of roasted or grilled asparagus with dinner tonight.
2. Beefs up immunity: Asparagus contains inulin, a prebiotic fibre, which helps stimulate the growth of probiotics (good bacteria) in the stomach. Probiotics lead to stronger immunity, as well as better digestion.
3. Cuts calories – not flavour: A six-spear serving has just 20 calories and four grams of carbohydrates. Plus, it contains two grams of fibre, which helps stabilize blood sugar levels and ward off hunger pangs. Make long strips using a vegetable peeler and toss the crunchy raw strands with your favourite vinaigrette.
Did you know? Asparagus contain prebiotics. Prebiotics are carbohydrates that your body can't digest or absorb. After you eat prebiotics, they travel to your colon, and become food for the good bacteria that live there. In other words, prebiotics feed the probiotics living in your digestive tract.
