How to make the best cup of coffee, according to experts
Whether you're a coffee connoisseur or simply curious, making the perfect cup of java requires a few important steps.
How do you make a great cup of coffee at home? When someone else makes it for us, it's easy to take for granted that it takes skill and practice. Turns out, there are a few tips you can follow to make your at-home coffee experience as great as a coffee shop one.
We asked Naomy Brenneur, manager of Montreal-based specialty coffee shop White Heron, for her tips on how to make the best cup of coffee at home.
1. Invest in your beans
"You can't make good coffee without good coffee," says Naomy. Ditch the pre-ground coffee from the supermarket and buy either directly from a roaster or from your local café. Bonus: you'll support small businesses.
Check the roasting date of your coffee; you want beans that have been roasted in the last two months.
2. Grinding
The size of the grind considerably affects the taste of your coffee. Invest in a grinder so you can have fresh-ground beans every day. Alternatively, ask your barista to grind them for you and write down the grind size so you can keep track.
Try different grind sizes until you are satisfied with the taste.
3. Clean your equipment
"Keeping your moka pot or espresso machine dirty to 'season' your coffee is a myth," says Naomy.
Coffee beans are oily, and since oil is not water-soluble, coffee residue in your machine will make your drink taste bitter. Find appropriate cleaning products for your coffee-making equipment.
4. Taste test
Finally, improving your coffee is a process of trial and error. Taste your drink before adding any milk and sugar, and keep track of what you've tried.
