Method
In saucepan, combine milk, cream, sugar and vanilla pod and seeds. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until sugar has dissolved and small bubbles form around edge, about 5 minutes. Remove saucepan from heat, cover and let steep for 5 minutes.
Discard vanilla pod. Stir in chocolate. Return saucepan to heat and cook over medium-low heat, stirring often, until chocolate has melted and mixture is thick, about 2 minutes.
Divide hot chocolate among mugs and sprinkle with your choice of toppings, if using.
TEST KITCHEN TIP
For a quicker version, replace the vanilla pod with 1 tsp vanilla extract and omit the steeping step.
