In small saucepan, bring water to boil. Reduce heat; add cinnamon stick, star anise, fresh ginger, cloves, peppercorns and crushed cardamom pods. Simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat; add black tea leaves. Cover and let stand for 10 minutes. Strain and pour into two 1 1⁄2-cup mugs. Divide hot frothed milk, hot espresso and maple syrup, if desired, between mugs. Garnish each serving with cinnamon stick. Serve immediately.
Test Kitchen Tip: To froth milk without a frother, simply pour hot, but not boiling, milk into Mason jar. Seal jar, wrap in tea towel (to avoid burns) and shake vigorously for 20 seconds.
