Method
Preheat oven to 375°F. Butter a 10-inch cast-iron skillet or 9-inch baking dish; set aside.
In large bowl, toss together plums, cherries, sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice, salt and cinnamon (if using). Scrape into prepared pan.
Topping
In bowl, using fork, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. In small bowl, stir together cream and butter. Drizzle into flour mixture, stirring with fork to form ragged, sticky dough. With spoon, drop 9 evenly spaced mounds over fruit mixture.
Place on baking sheet and bake until topping is browned and no longer doughy, about 45 minutes, covering with foil if browning too quickly. Let cool 20 to 30 minutes. Serve warm.
Test Kitchen Tip: Placing the cast-iron pan on a baking tray prevents any bubbling fruit mixture from dripping to the bottom of the oven.
