Tried it: Walter All-Natural Caesar Mix
My husband and my dad are big fans of a good Caesar, so when a box of
Walter All-Natural Craft Caesar
Mix landed on my desk at work, I knew just the duo to take the mix for a taste test. Walter is a Vancouver-based company that makes small batches of the all-natural caesar mix without MSG or high-fructose corn syrup found in mass produced mixes. Walter keeps the ingredient list for the craft mix small, with only "vine-ripened tomatoes, grated horseradish, Worchestershire and hot sauce, select spices, and real clam juice from the North Atlantic" in the all-glass bottles. The result is a truly fresh, tomato-y drink mix. I liked the milder version of the mix without the booze (I know, I know), but the fellas prefer a little heat. Their version included a dash of fresh lime juice and a shot of Tabasco, and freshly-ground black pepper. We all liked Walters' thick consistency which allows for the addition of alcohol, ice and lime juice without diluting the flavour of the mix. (We served ours with
Tito's Handmade Vodka, and
Ontario Sweet and Spicy Jalapeños from
Stasis Preserves.) Walter also makes a "well-spiced" version is for Caesar fans who favour bolder flavours with a long-lasting heat. Either version would be delicious as the base for this
Surf and Turf Caesar. Scallops and bacon? Yes, please! Did you know? The name of the homegrown mix honours
restauteur Walter Chell who is credited for inventing this uniquely Canadian cocktail in Calgary way back in 1969. Looking for Walter?
