Good-for-You Snacks To Go
Summertime is synonymous with going outside. And whether you’re out with the kids for a swim or a hike, a picnic in the park, or running to soccer practice, one thing is for sure — kids get hungry. Be prepared with snacks at the ready.
It’s the season we look forward to all year, so of course we want to make the most of it with our kids. But one thing that’s sure to put a damper on a fun day? Hungry kids! Whether they’re just hanging out at home or they’re on a fun outing or excursion, most kids get hungry between meals. Well-planned snacks can provide them with energy and help them get the nutrients they need on a daily basis.
Here’s Our Top 8 Picks to Get Your Snack On!
8. Dip it! For some reason, eating veggies are next level when they come with a dip. Start with carrots, celery, and tiny tomatoes to dip into hummus, ranch dressing, or guacamole. Then get adventurous and introduce new veggies and dip as the summer goes on.
7. Grab a handful. Trail mix is always a winning snack. Why wouldn't it be? Buy small containers or make-your-own customized mix with everyone’s favourites — raisins, nuts, seeds and chocolate chips to start.
6. Mmm, smoothies! The night before an outing, freeze yogurt sticks or packets, and take them along for frozen smoothies on your day away from home. They’ll make for a refreshing treat when everyone stops for a break.
5. Get poppin’. Popcorn makes a great whole-grain snack, and every kernel contains vitamins, minerals, fibre, and antioxidants. Make your own at home and sprinkle with a bit of salt, or shake it up with fun flavours like Cheddar, ranch, or cinnamon too.
4. Lil’ sammies. Nothing is simpler than two slices of bread or small pita pockets or crackers with a filling. Let your imagination run wild and create yummy combos from classic PB&J to tuna or egg salad, and cucumber and cream cheese.
3. La la la legumes! Roasted chickpeas are the new kids in town, packed with protein and fibre too. Look for flavours like smoked, curried, or lemon pepper, for a variety of options.
2. Don’t be a jerk! Let’s talk about protein: Beef jerky is a traditional favourite and it’s easy to take along but don’t be afraid to introduce your kids to different jerky varieties. Try turkey or chicken jerky, or even teriyaki, hickory-smoked or mesquite lime vegan jerky.
1. And our top pick for a snack is… Fruit Snacks! Set your kids up for success by choosing fruit snacks that taste good and are easy to take with you on your summer adventures. Pay attention though, as not all fruit bars are alike. Even if a fruit snack claims to be “made with real fruit,” check the ingredient statement for non-fruit ingredients such as high-fructose corn syrup and other refined sugars, starches, preservatives, artificial colours and flavours, and other non-fruit ingredients.
