A Dermatologist's Favourite Drugstore Eye Creams
Who says you need to spend hundreds of dollars for quality skincare?
If you're thinking about trying out new skincare, don't discount your local drugstore.
"It really comes down to ingredients and the elegance of formulation," says Dr. Julia Carroll, a dermatologist at Compass Dermatology in Toronto, Ont.
In many cases, drugstore products feature similar ingredients to those you'd find in a dermatologist's office or high-end store. Though concentrations might be lower or not advertised, there are plenty of affordable skincare options that don't compromise on quality.
Here are Dr. Carroll's top drugstore eye cream picks.
These are her top picks for drugstore facial cleansers, moisturizers, and sunscreens.
Eye creams
"The skin around your eyes is some of the most sensitive skin on your body," says Dr. Carroll. "It will react more to products than other areas of the face."
Generally, look for products that have been tested around the eye area and be cautious with active ingredients.
L'Oréal Paris Revitalift Triple Power LZR
Amazon, $33
L'Oréal's "cult-favourite" eye serum with caffeine is perfect for dry, tired eyes. "It's a simple serum but it helps to moisturize and immediately plump up the skin to help with the appearance of fine lines," says Dr. Carroll.
Bonus: the applicator has three cooling balls at the tip that you can massage around the eye area
RoC Multi Correxion Revive + Glow Eye Balm
Amazon, $37
The Vitamin C and peptides in this eye balm brighten and firm up your skin. Its unique applicator also makes it easy for travel and throwing in your purse. "It's almost like a lip balm, it just glides on," says Dr. Carroll.
Cerave Skin renewing eye cream
Amazon, $37
CeRave's gentle eye cream is a go-to product for Dr. Carroll. With all the goodies, including essential ceramides, peptides, and caffeine, this affordable option will keep your under eyes moisturized.
Eucerin Aquaphor Stick
Amazon, $5
Believe it or not, this lip balm from Eucerin is one of Dr. Carroll's favourite eye cream hacks. Not only is it great for dry lips, the mix of shea butter and panthenol add gentle hydration to the eyes as well.
"If you're doing sports, it's also an easy way to add a protection barrier to the skin," she says"
Serums
Serums are a great way to boost your skin's intake of specific ingredients, including actives like retinol and vitamin C.
L'Oréal Paris 12% Pure Vitamin C Brightening Face Serum
Shoppers Drug Mart, $48
"You want between 10 and 20 percent vitamin C concentration for it be effective," says Dr. Carroll. At 12 per cent, this serum from L'Oréal is a great option to brighten skin and reduce the appearance of dark spots.
If you're looking for an affordable vitamin C serum, Dr. Carroll notes that this is a respectable dupe for SkinCeutical's sillymarin serum.
Cliniderm Soothing serum
Shoppers Drug Mart, $30
Cliniderm is an understated dermatologist favourite for those with highly-sensitive and allergy-prone skin. Their soothing serum is known to not be irritating and is mostly made of hydrating hyaluronic acid.
