This welcome-Christmas floor mat can work at home all winter long and lie around at the cottage during the summer.

Supplies
Wool felt or duffle cloth as follows:
Burgundy rectangle, 101.5 x 76 cm (40 x 30 in), for mat
2 green strips, each 101.5 x 6.5 cm (40 x 2 1/2 in) and 2 green strips, each 76 x 6.5 cm (30 x 2 1/2 in), for border
White rectangle, 61 x 25.5 cm (24 x 10 in), for trees
Matching thread
Pencil and rectangle of paper-backed fusible interfacing, 61 x 25.5 cm (optional)
Dressmaker's chalk pencil
Pinking shears

Instructions
1. With pinking shears, trim 1 long edge of each strip. Having untrimmed edges to inside and cutting mitred corners as you work, pin appropriate-length strip to right side of mat along each edge; machine-zigzag inside edges and along each mitre.

2. See instructions (below) to enlarge tree pattern.

3. Fuse interfacing to wrong side of white felt. With pencil, trace 6 trees onto backing; with pinking shears, cut out. Peel off backing and arrange as desired on right side of mat; fuse in place. (Or, if desired, omit Step 3; trace trees directly onto felt, cut out, arrange and machine-zigzag in place.)

Enlarging patterns and motifs
On brown paper, draw grid of horizontal and vertical lines 2.5 cm (1 in) apart. Each square on pattern grid equals a 2.5 cm square on paper. Draw each pattern line onto corresponding square on paper. Transfer any markings. (Seam allowance is included, if necessary.)
