A basic doll to knit

Use this basic doll pattern to make the Audrey Hepburn or Marilyn Monroe dolls, or dress it up using your own imagination!

Materials

Wool Cotton by Rowan, approx 122 yd/50 g ball (50% wool/50% cotton): 1 ball in Ecru 900 (MC)
• 1 pair of US 3 (3.25 mm) needles
• Fibrefill for stuffing

Size
Approximate height 10-1/2 ins (26 cm).

Gauge
26 sts x 32 rows = 4 ins (10 cm) square over St st using US 3 (3.25 mm) needles and MC yarn.

Pattern
Body (make 2)

Using US size 3 (3.25 mm) needles and MC yarn, cast on 16 sts.
Row 1: Knit to end.
Row 2: Purl to end.
Row 3: K1, m1, k14, m1, k1. (18 sts)
Row 4: Purl.
Row 5: K1, m1, k16, m1, k1. (20 sts)
Row 6: Purl.
Work in St st for a further 12 rows ending with a WS row.
Next row: K1, sl1, k1, psso, k14, k2tog, k1. (18 sts)
Work 3 rows St st.
Next row: K1, sl1, k1, psso, k12, k2tog, k1. (16 sts)
Next row: P1, p2tog, p10, p2tog tbl, p1. (14 sts)
Next row: K1, sl1, k1, psso, k8, k2tog, k1. (12 sts)
Next row: Purl.
Bind off.

Head (make 2)
Using US size 3 (3.25 mm) needles and MC yarn, cast on 12 sts.
Row 1: Knit to end.
Row 2: Purl to end.
Row 3: K1, m1, k10, m1, k1. (14 sts)
Row 4: Purl to end.
Row 5: K1, m1, k12, m1, k1. (16 sts)
Row 6: Purl to end.
Work in St st for a further 10 rows ending on a WS row.
Next row: K1, sl1, k1, psso, k10, k2tog, k1. (14 sts)
Next row: Purl to end.
Next row: K1, sl1, k1, psso, k8, k2tog, k1. (12 sts)
Next row: Purl to end.
Bind off.

Leg (make 2)
Using US size 3 (3.25 mm) needles and MC yarn, cast on 11 sts.
Row 1: Knit to end.
Row 2: Purl to end.
Rep Rows 1-2 14 times more (28 rows more in total).
Next row: K1, m1, knit to last stitch, m1, k1. (13 sts)
Work 3 more rows in St st.
Next row: K1, m1, knit to last stitch, m1, k1. (15 sts)
Next row: Purl to end.
Bind off.

Arm (make 2)
Using US size 3 (3.25 mm) needles and MC yarn, cast on 7 sts.
Row 1: Knit to end.
Row 2: Purl to end.
Row 3: K1, m1, knit to last stitch, m1, k1. (9 sts)
Row 4: Purl to end.
Row 5: K1, m1, knit to last stitch, m1, k1. (11 sts)
Row 6: Purl to end.
Work a further 26 rows in St st ending with a WS row.
Next row: K2, sl1, k1, psso, k3, k2tog, k2. (9 sts)
Next row: Purl to end.
Bind off.

Making up
Weave in all loose ends.
Press and block to correct size.
Join front and back body pieces together, leaving top open to insert stuffing.
Join side edges of arms together to create tubes, leaving top open to insert stuffing.
Join legs in the same way as arms.
Join side and top edges of head together, leaving bottom edges open to insert stuffing.
Insert stuffing into body pieces.
Join the top edges of body together.
Join bottom edges of head together.
Stitch the head onto top of body.
Stitch arms into position on the body; place the top of the arm at the first shaping marks on body.
Stitch top of legs closed and stitch into position at the bottom of the body.
Embroider faces; add hair and clothes according to the specific patterns for each doll.
