Voting rights in Canada: A complicated history
As we look ahead to International Women's Day, we've taken some time to
celebrate Canadian trailblazers in our March 2014 issue. The achievements of these women are something we're really proud to remember, including Nellie McClung's role in women's right to vote and run for public office in 1916.
But of course there are other parts to the story of voting rights in Canada. We didn't have room to cover every element but as some of our readers pointed out on Twitter, many Canadians did not have the right to vote until much later. Did you know that many
women of colour were not allowed to vote in Canada until the 1940s? And aboriginal women covered by the Indian Act could not vote federally until 1960 -- even in Manitoba. Here's an
