A Good Catch - Thinking about sustainable fish
Yesterday, I attended a book launch for
A Good Catch, by Jill Lambert at Seafood Oyster Bed and Grill in Toronto. The origin and method of catch of the seafood that graces our dinner tables is becoming more of a concern as we become more aware that stocks are depleting. However, it can be hard to become a conscience consumer all of a sudden. In her book, Lambert helps to make the transition easier by explaining what the best and most responsible choices are. The book also features
seventy delicious-sounding recipes from top chefs around Canada - including a couple recipes from Canadian Living's very own test kitchen. Celebrity chefs such as Jamie Kennedy, Lynn Crawford, Karen Barnaby and Bonnie Stern have also shared some mouth-watering recipes.
SeaChoice, an initiative of Sustainable Seafood Canada that shares Lambert's goal of creating a sustainable seafood market, wrote an introduction that helps guide consumers in the right direction when shopping for fish. They provide questions that should be asked, explanations why certain species should be avoided and substitutions for fish you might find in other recipes. This book is a great choice for people wishing to expand their knowledge of sustainable seafood and for the cook wanting to expand their recipe collection. It would also make a great Christmas gift!
On another note, for those in Toronto looking for something to do over the next few day, Planet in Focus (International Environmental Film and Video Festival) is running until October 26. They have some great titles playing over the next few days, so if you're interested you can check out what's playing here. The movie Tableland, which Christine
wrote about in yesterday's Foodie-File blog, is playing tomorrow evening Bye for now! Are you craving seafood now? Check out our
