Thinking about summer quilts
One of my favourite things about summer is switching out the big duvet on my bed for my light summer quilt. It's the first quilt I made – a
Canadian Living pattern that I pulled out of the magazine in 1995 and carried around with me for years before actually sitting down at the sewing machine.
I've made many more quilts since that one – quilts for weddings, for babies, to grace couches and car seats and beds. But it's been months since I sat down at the sewing machine with quilting in mind. Deciding to knit 12 sweaters in 12 months seems to do that to a person.
But lately I've been having quilt-y thoughts again. Who knows why? Maybe I've run out of things to think about while knitting, or maybe it's the siren call of the stack of
Flea Market Fancy fat quarters that I know is waiting for me at
The Workroom. [caption id="attachment_8710" align="aligncenter" width="264" caption="Photo, dsquilts.com"]
[/caption] Since my time for quilting has waned, so has my time for reading about quilting. There are dozens of quilting blogs out there, some with really interesting, challenging, modern designs. But the ones I keep going back to are simpler than simple: Erin's "
for the love of Liberty" quilt and Alicia's
Ollalieberry Ice Cream Quilt are both patchworks made up of simple squares;
Melissa's kitchen quilt uses half-square triangles. So maybe my
summer stitch-along project will be a quilt. Simple patchwork, simply quilted, well loved. There's not much better than that, is there?
