A Total Solar Eclipse Is Happening On April 8: Here's Everything You Need To Know

Get ready for a rare celestial occurrence happening on April 8.

On April 8, 2024, we'll be lucky enough to witness a spectacular and rare event that will occur in the skies above Canada, the United States and Mexico. As the moon aligns perfectly between the Earth and the Sun, certain parts of the continent will plunge into darkness.

Yes, we're talking about a total solar eclipse.

According to the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), most provinces haven't witnessed a total solar eclipse in over 50 years and won't have a chance to experience another one for 80 years, so make sure you don't miss this one!

It's worth noting that partial lunar and solar eclipses happen regularly across the country.

The eclipse's path of totality, where people will be able to witness the full extent of the occurrence, will pass through some cities and towns in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. Those living outside the path of totality will still be able to observe a partial eclipse, where the sun will not be entirely hidden.

The time and duration of the eclipse varies depending on where you are, so make sure to check out when you can expect to see it in your city.

Remember: looking directly at the Sun, even during an eclipse, without proper protection can cause serious problems, such as temporary or permanent loss of eyesight. Be prepared by purchasing a pair of eclipse sunglasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 International Standard to get the best (and safest!) viewing experience.
