How to knit shaggy cuffed baby booties

The hippie days of the '60s and '70s inspired these unique hand-knitted baby booties for newborns.

How to make knit shaggy cuffed baby booties
Measurement: Newborn to 3 months.

Materials
• 140 m (approx) each red and orange double-knitting weight yarn
• 3.5mm/US#4 straight needles 3.5 mm/US#4 double-pointed needles
• 2 stitch holders
• 2.5mm/US #1.5 crochet hook
• Darning needle

Gauge:
22 sts and 28 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) over St st using 3.5mm/US #4 needles

Begin: Orange Cuff
Using straight needles, with (A), cast on 15 Sts.
Work in St st (knit the RS rows, purl the WS rows) for 44 rows, or until work measures 5 inches. Cast off.
Using (B), with WS facing, pick up and knit 30 sts along one long side edge.
Row 1 (WS): Purl.
Row 2 (RS): Knit.
Repeat the above 2 rows 4 more times, and work Row 1 once more. (Since cuff is to be folded over, the purl side of the cuff is opposite the knit side of the main body of the bootie.)
Cut yarn. Place first and last 10 sts of this row on stitch holders.

Create the instep piece: Working only on center 10 sts, in St st, work 2 rows with (A), 2 rows with (B), 2 rows with (A), 2 rows with (B), 3 rows with (A).
Cut yarn but leave sts on the needle.
Using double-pointed needles, and (B), with RS facing, knit 10 sts from first stitch holder, pick up and k 7 sts along first side of instep piece, work 10 sts from needle, pick up and k 7 sts along other side of instep piece, knit 10 sts from left holder. 44 sts.
Next row (WS): P17, m1, p10, m1, p17. 46 sts.
Continue working in St st for 10 rows.

Sole:
Row 1 (RS): K3, k3tog, k11, k3tog, k6, k3tog, k11, k3tog, k3. 38 sts.
Knit 1 row.
Row 3 (RS): K2, k3tog, k9, k3tog, k4, k3tog, k9, k3tog, k2. 30 sts.
Knit 1 row
Row 5 (RS): K1, k3tog, k7, k3tog, k2, k3tog, k7, k3tog, k1. 22 sts.
Knit 2 rows. Divide sts onto two needles, and with darning needle sew together, running needle through all stitches, alternating sides.

Assembly:
Sew back seam, turn down cuff and make fringe as outlined below, alternating (A) and (B) yarns. Trim fringe to 1 inch, so that it just sits on top of the boot.

Designer's tip: Making the fringe
Cut about 40 3-inch lengths of yarn. Fold each length in half. Using a crochet hook, knot the lengths of yarn evenly distributed around the edge of the cuff (approx 20 per cuff). Trim to desired length.
