Pingue Prusciutto from Niagara

foodie findsThis prosciutto has become crazy popular with Toronto chefs. You’ll see it on menus all over town in these parts. Mario Pingue of Niagara Food Specialties specializes in all things porky. It’s his prosciutto, though, that has a melt in your mouth nutty sweetness. It’s something almost impossible to find outside of some Italian guy’s basement who makes his own. (more…)

Ontario Craft Brewers at Hart House

OCB Hart HouseLast Thursday I checked out the Ontario Craft Brewers Festival and Summer BBQ that was held at Hart House at the University of Toronto. The usual Ontario brewers were there, including Great Lakes Brewery, Grand River Brewing, Creemore Springs Brewery, Mill Street Brewery, Wellington Brewing Co., Camerons Brewing Company, Big Rock Brewery, and Black Oak Brewery. Mario Pingue, of Niagara Specialty Meats, supplied the porchetta, sausage and prosciutto - it was a porky fest!

Saskatoon Berry Pie

My blog on Saskatoon Berries has proven to be very popular. A foodie-file reader was asking for a recipe for saskatoon berry pie. I found a recipe that Canadian Living published in our Market Fresh special issue. Since I’m still getting alot of interest in Saskatoon Berries, I thought I would post the recipe here.

What to use instead of Buttermilk?

I have a new concept for Mondays on the Foodie-file. I get asked questions by readers on a regular basis and have decided to share the answers with other foodie people who might be interested. To kick off; a question I get asked at least once a month:

Is there anything that can be substituted for buttermilk? Recipes usually call for a small amount and you can’t buy less than a litre so I end up either not making the recipe or throwing out the unused portion. (more…)
