Dinner at Casa Brusada

porcini mushroomsFirst night in Italy and here are pictures from a delicious dinner we have had planned for us at Casa Brusada restaurant in the small town of Montebelluna. The town is nestled in the foothills of the Dolomites, over looking vineyards and medieval villages. Mixed grill seems to be a favourite offering of the area; we had a perfectly cooked steak, lamb chops and the best veal I’ve ever tasted. Giuseppe Pagotto was working the grill the evening I was there filled me in that the white asparagus I was hoping was in season is finished but lucky for me it is porcini season.

We are also served a fresh cheese here, kind of the texture of cottage cheese but sweeter and milkier and a bit more stretchy than curdy like mozzarella. I have been looking for the name of it but as yet have not come up with it, some suggestions have been Stracchino, Casatella and Schiz all of which are fresh cheeses from the area but none of which, after a little research, fit the bill. I have a picture of the cheese below, if anyone knows what it is called please let me know.

This is the cheese, It was served alongside this little custard-souffle type dish as a first course with a creamy tomato sauce.

Here is a picture of Giuseppe on the grill. When he saw I was interested in food he brought out the giant porcini mushrooms above to show me, really I had never seen any bigger!
